About the Program

Are you looking for ways to make your home safer and lower your utility costs?

Brightpoint’s Weatherization program provides energy conservation measures to reduce the utility bills of qualified residents in northeast Indiana. Weatherization is an income-based program that is open to both renters and owners. We offer a free home energy audit and home improvement measures for residential dwellings to decrease energy use and lower utility bills, while also making your home a healthy and safe place to live.

This is not an emergency or a home repair program. Rehabilitation items like windows and roofing, emergency repairs to appliances, and mold or other hazard remediation are not included in the weatherization program. If you have an inoperable heating source and need help with emergency repairs to your heating unit, please refer to Brightpoint’s Emergency Repair and Replace program.

Weatherization measures may include:

  • Air sealing of areas that allow warm air to escape.
  • Installing insulation to walls, attic, heating ducts, and water lines.
  • Repairing health, safety, and efficiency problems with heating systems.
  • Installing LED lightbulbs.
  • Installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Applicants with income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level

  • who are either owner-occupants or tenants,
  • and live in single family, site-built homes, and manufactured/mobile homes,
  • or a multi-family structure of up to four units where at least 50% of the households are also income eligible.

Yes, there is a waiting list. Waitlist priority is given to vulnerable populations, such as older adults, children, and those with disabilities. Brightpoint can provide weatherization services to about 100 households per year.

Homes selected for weatherization are free of pests, hazards, and excessive clutter and have excessive energy use that can be reduced affordably by weatherization.

The weatherization program installs insulation to walls and attics, seals the home against air leaks, and works on the space and water heating systems to ensure safety and efficiency.

Work that is not eligible for the weatherization program includes: rehabilitation items like windows, doors, siding, roofing, gutters, etc.; emergency repairs to or replacements of furnaces, air conditioners, and water heaters; and mold, asbestos, lead-based paint, and other hazard remediation.

Complete and submit an Energy Assistance Program (EAP) application and answer “Yes” to the weatherization referral question.

Step One: Complete an application for the Utility Assistance Program by following the instructions on the Utility Assistance program page. During the application process, indicate your interest in Weatherization.

Please Note: The number of applications Brightpoint receives far exceeds our current capacity to weatherize homes, so you may be on a waiting list for a while.

Step Two: There is nothing more for you to do after applying. Applications are scored on the highest energy burden based on a federal and state priority system. All applicants are placed on a waiting list based on the scores.

Step Three: If you meet eligibility requirements and are taken off the waiting list, we will contact you to schedule a home energy audit and inform you of further steps.
