Brightpoint Slocum Pointe Affordable Housing Community Taking Applications
Fort Wayne – Brightpoint and Keller Development, Inc. have been co-developing the Slocum Pointe affordable housing community, located at 2529 Curdes Avenue in Fort Wayne. New Generation Management will be managing the property and taking applications beginning February 24 at Ryker Reserve, 1825 Laverne Avenue in Fort Wayne from 10 am – 3pm.
Slocum Pointe consists of the adaptive reuse of the former Frances Slocum School into 27 apartments, with the new construction of an additional 16 apartments adjacent to the existing building. Thirty-five apartments will be two-bedroom, and eight will be one-bedroom. Eighty percent of the apartments will be reserved for people aged 55 or older, and twenty percent will be reserved for individuals 18 or over with intellectual or developmental disabilities. All apartments will be reserved for households with incomes of 60% of the area median income or below, and all rents will be kept affordable so that no household pays more than one third of their monthly income toward their housing cost.
All of the apartments will include a full kitchen with oven, range, refrigerator, microwave, and garbage disposal. Each will have a washer and dryer. The entire development will meet the National Green Building Standard’s Silver rating for energy efficiency and water conservation. Both buildings will be served by elevators, and all units will be accessible and/or adaptable to meet the needs of those with physical disabilities. Common amenities will include an on-site leasing office, a private office for social service delivery, a multi-purpose community room with kitchen, a fitness room, a computer center, and a multimedia room. Outdoor amenities will include paved off-street parking, raised garden beds, and a wheelchair-accessible glider swing.
A referral agreement with Turnstone will ensure the disabled population has access to apartments, and Brightpoint, Turnstone, and New Generation Management will work to ensure appropriate services and referrals are available to tenants of varying needs.
The development site was specifically chosen because of the amenities nearby such as healthcare, education, employment, retail, transportation, and recreational opportunities that will be of particular benefit to tenants.
Construction on the development began in April of 2019 and will be completed by April of 2020. For questions about leasing, please contact New Generation Management at 260-497-7010 ext. 233.
